Hey! I am Laura and I have been sewing and creating since I was 8 years old.
I am a graduate of Georgia Tech's School of Civil Engineering and have been practicing structural engineering for over 35 years (yikes!). I also have a Master of Science degree from Tech, earning credits through the school of Textile Engineering and Georgia State's Art Department to flesh out my structural engineering classes.
All of my life I have had an artistic interest outside of my professional life, including jewelry making, pottery, weaving and stained glass design. But I always knew I wanted to get back to sewing - specifically to give quilting a try. I finally made the plunge in 2016 and have not looked back since!
This is my childhood doll Margaret, and she is modeling some of the fruits of my very first sewing efforts. Notice the coordinating fabrics in her top!
I greatly admire both Kaffe Fassett & Brandon Mably for their sense of design and color. I took a workshop with them several years ago and, in his critique of my piece (pictured) Kaffe recalled watching me audition the background fabric. First he questioned it, asking himself if I was mad, then he applauded it, saying it was genius. Thus was born Mad Genius Fibers!
This is the finished quilt top that inspired Kaffe's comments and the springboard for this website
