Quilt size & pricing information

Please contact me  if you cannot find an answer to your question.

  • Each quilt listed for sale has dimensions stated on its description, as well as the largest size bed the quilt can cover
  • It is also standard to have "drops" on a bed quilt, meaning the amount the quilt extends from the sides and bottom of the quilt to cover the three exposed sides of the mattress.  A standard drop is 12"
  • A lap quilt can measure from 36" square to 50" x 80"
  • A Twin size bed is 39" x 75" , so the quilt size required with 12" drops is 63" x 87"
  • A Twin XL size bed is 39" x 80", so the quilt size required with 12" drops is 63" x 92"
  • A Full size bed is 54" x 75", so the quilt size required with 12" drops is 78" x 87"
  • A Queen size bed is 60" x 80", so the quilt size required with 12" drops is 84" x 92"
  • A King size bed is 78" x 80", so the quilt size required with 12" drops is 102" x 92"
  • A California King size bed is 72" x 84", so the quilt size required with 12" drops is 96" x 96"

  • Quilt front
  • Quilt back
  • Batting, the material between the front and back that provides substance to the quilt to this item.

1. Listed in each quilt description is the materials cost, which includes:

  • Cost of fabric for the front, back and binding - quilt shop quality fabric averages $12.50 per yard, and a standard yard meaures 42" wide x 36" long
  • Cost of quilt pattern, thread, needles, rotary blades, surcharge for sewing machine maintenance
  • Cost of batting
  • Cost for quilting process (the stitching that binds the three layers together), calculated at the industry standard of 0.025 cents per square inch

2. Listed in each quilt description is the approximate number of hours to create the front and back, as well as to hand stitch the binding around the perimeter of the quilt.  The cost of the quilt includes "paying" me for this time.  The rate varies with the complexity of the piece.  Things that factor into this time are:

  • Quilting with a pattern is all about precision, to ensure the seams match up between blocks.  To do this there is quite a bit of sewing, pressing, squaring up and trimming, adding additional elements, pressing, squaring up and trimming, etc.
  • Improvisational quilting, done for the backs, is all about creating a fabric jigsaw puzzle, which means a lot of measuring and sometimes creation of full-size paper patterns
  • The binding of each quilt is machine stitched to the front, then turned under and hand sewn to the back.  This creates a blind seam around the perimeter, but is also a time-consuming process that typically takes five to six hours per quilt.

3.  Not listed in each quilt description, but an essential piece of each design, is my love.  I absolutely love each laborious part of the quilting process, from choosing designs to finding the perfect fabrics, to starching the pieces, to cutting and trimming, to sewing and binding.  Each element allows me to touch the cotton and inhale the colors and patterns, always seeking to create a fabric piece infused with my love.
